As soon as possible! I try to only schedule 2-3 sessions per week and 4 weekend sessions per month so the schedule fills up quickly. I can be somewhat flexible with timing for sessions but typically attempt to schedule outdoor sessions either early morning or early evening before dusk for that yummy lighting we all desire. Newborn sessions typically will take place in the morning. Please include your due date when you contact me if you wish to schedule a newborn or maternity session.
When is the best time for those cute newborn photos?
The best time to photograph newborns is between 5 days and 2 weeks old, when they are still super sleepy. After you reserve your session, you will be tentatively scheduled for a week past your due date, and we will adjust the date depending on when your baby arrives. I ask that parents call within a few days of birth to make sure to get a spot on the calendar. Newborn sessions are done on weekday mornings unless a weekend is specifically requested and available when booking your session.
My baby is 4/5/6 weeks old, but I want to do a newborn session. Is it too late?
No way! Your baby is still as cute as ever, and will probably start smiling any second now, which is a great milestone to capture. We can still use newborn props and hats for older babies, and I modify the poses to keep your baby comfortable. Your baby will likely be awake for some/half/most of the session, so I prepare for that as well and consider it a bonus if your baby falls asleep.
Do you offer in-home newborn sessions?
I do. If desired, I can bring props and lighting to your home for the session. I do have some basic requests and preparation for you if that is your choice.
Studio VS. Home newborn sessions?
As a photographer I do prefer studio newborn sessions for a few reasons. I want to give each of my clients the highest-quality photos possible. In the studio, I can control the environment completely. I can control the lighting and temperature to the level that I have found works best with newborns. I can have all setups ready and prepared for the session when a family arrives. Which means the session will typically be shorter than in home and I will not need to rearrange your furniture. In the studio, if we need a change, I have all my fabrics, textures, and props at ready disposal. Generally, I have enough at the home but I cannot pack everything.
What if I have older siblings for my newborn session?
Fantastic. I encourage always to do family and sibling photos. I usually try to do those first and get them out of the way. I keep the studio or environment very warm and cozy so I want you to be comfortable in the photos and look your best. Doing them in the beginning ensures this in most cases. If you come to the studio, parents can drive separate and when family/sibling photos are complete, Daddy can leave with siblings. Or there is an ice-cream shop down the street that daddy can take the kids for a little walk. Of course for in home sessions, kiddos can go play after their photos with baby.
Do you offer a package for people who schedule maternity and newborn sessions together?
I do! I have session collections for both maternity and newborn and also for a belly to first year package. Please check pricing here for details!
Can I reschedule if it rains? What if I, or someone in my family, gets sick?
I do not charge a penalty for weather or illness-related rescheduling. Please do not bring a sick child to your session! On the other hand, do not reschedule if you or your child has acne, scratches or bruises. I can edit those out later. I will suggest rescheduling outdoor sessions if the temperature will be less than 30 degrees or over 90 degrees, if it's very windy, or if rain is imminent. I will do sessions in the rain if you wish to proceed as scheduled. Please understand that weekend sessions are usually completely booked months in advance so we may need to get crafty in rescheduling your session. For instance, if you had been planning an evening session, I may need to switch you to a morning session to accommodate two sessions in one day.
Is there an extra charge for adding more people into the photos?
No, whether it be three people or twenty, you are paying for my time at the session and editing your photos. I provide the same number of retouched images regardless of how many people are at your session. However, as more people are added, the more "posed" the photos become, so if you like a more candid look, limit the number of people at your session.
Do you ever host mini or specialty sessions?
I do. My studio mate and I plan signature sessions often. These are shorter sessions and are themed, they are generally all inclusive meaning you pay for the time and a set number of digital images. They are a great way to get in an extra session or just for something fun to fit your child’s personality. Check my facebook page and blog often to see these posted with details. I also generally offer Signature sessions in the spring and fall. These are at a set location of my choice and a great way to get in sessions during my busiest seasons.
Do you photograph events like baby showers and birthday parties?
Of course! Please contact me to get a quote for your event.
Do you do cake-smash sessions for one-year-olds?
Yes! The cake smash can be included in your baby's one-year-old session for your one-year-old baby at no additional charge (you would provide the cake). This part of the session is done on a easy to clean backdrop that can get messy and then thrown away or washed easily. We'll do the cake smash at the end of your baby's session. It usually takes only 15 minutes. I also offer a few sweet bath shots after the cake smash which are sure to be fun and a way to get a bit cleaned up before the car ride home.
